Artha is a Sanskrit word that translates to prosperity, abundance, or wealth. In some Indian philosophies, Artha is one of the four aims of human life, along with dharma (righteousness), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation).

Artha is also a members-only health club in West Hollywood. I know, it sounds boujee when I say it like that, but it’s the complete opposite. It’s a community of like-minded individuals who seek a space where the health of our bodies and minds is brought to the forefront; a place to take care of ourselves and others.

I followed my beloved yoga teacher, John, when he moved his classes to Artha about a year and a half ago. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would become the best investment into my well-being that I’ve ever made. In addition to unlimited yoga, Artha offers a range of therapies including infrared saunas, cryotherapy and float tanks; all things I’d heard were fantastic for the nervous system but had never found the time to explore.

As a busy entrepreneur working in a creative field, having a space to unwind and recharge physically, spiritually and creatively is so important, especially in a city like Los Angeles. I wanted to share my gratitude for this amazing haven that’s allowed me to access another level of self-care. All the teachers are wonderful and bring something unique to the table. The range in yoga, from power flows and kundalini to sound healing and meditation classes, keep the practice interesting and impactful.

I typically visit Artha 3 times per week. This is what it looks like:

My sessions always start with yoga. I’ll opt for a power flow in the mornings to wake up mentally and physically, and begin accumulating energy for the day ahead. If I go in the evening instead, I’ll choose a restorative class to unwind, allowing me to disconnect from the day and get centered in my body and breath.

Next, I jump into the infrared sauna. I like to go for about 45 minutes, but studies show that just 20 minutes can deliver benefits that improve physical and mental health simultaneously. Known to assist detoxification, infrared therapy also stimulates collagen production and the circulatory system, encouraging healthy cells and leading to incredible anti-aging effects. In addition, it decreases cortisol levels while increasing serotonin which is amazing for the nervous system and mood regulation; in fact, it's often used as a tool in treating addiction. Infrared saunas penetrate tissues, joints and muscles, allowing for all-over healing and pain relief. All in all, this treatment leaves me feeling relaxed and restored, touching both internal and external aspects of my health.

From there, I’ll follow with cryotherapy. Over time I’ve worked my way up to 3 minutes in the cryotherapy chamber; yes, it’s cold and yes, it’s worth it. Cryotherapy involves exposing the body to near-freezing temperatures for brief moments, and while that sounds torturous, it actually has a ton of benefits. When the body is introduced to extreme cold, it responds by constricting the blood vessels and sending blood to our vital organs. Passing through these organs infuses the blood with oxygen and nutrients that then get delivered to tissues once the body returns to normal temperatures. This reduces inflammation and improves circulation, but studies have discovered cryotherapy may also boost metabolism, lessen anxiety, improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. The more of your bare skin that’s exposed, the more intense the treatment. I like to go into the chamber with just a towel, earmuffs and shoes but it’s totally okay to start warmer.

Last but certainly not least is the deprivation float tank. I tend to tack this on to an evening session because it completely relaxes me, making it a nice addition to unwind at the end of a long day. Of the three therapies, this one is my favorite. It’s been really helpful in quieting my mind and clearing overwhelming thoughts; I love to meditate while in the tank and find it is often the catalyst to breaking through creative stagnancy.

The idea behind floatation tanks is to suspend oneself in water at the same temperature as the body, buoyant from an Epsom salt solution, completely devoid of visual and auditory stimulation so that the body can enter a state of complete relaxation. The first sensory deprivation tank was designed in 1954 but they’ve gained massive popularity in recent years due to the amount of beneficial scientific evidence being released. These benefits include better sleep, improved physical and psychological recovery, and relief from anxiety and stress. There are a handful of studies that suggest deprivation tanks show an increase in imagination and intuition, leading to enhanced creativity.

Before I wrap this up, I have to mention the alternative treatments that Artha offers. These come at an additional cost with fantastic flat rates for members. These therapies are centered around muscle relaxation, facial regeneration and non-invasive body sculpting. My personal favorite is the cryotherapy facial.

Having all these incredible options under one roof and at my fingertips (the Artha app makes booking and canceling very easy) inspires me to take care of myself more deliberately. After all, when a habit is accessible and enjoyable it’s much more likely to stick. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend you check Artha out for yourself! I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
